Everything You Need to Know About Fixed Braces

Fixed braces have been straightening teeth for decades and for good reason. When it comes to correcting complex alignment issues, nothing matches their precision, reliability, and long-term results. If you have been thinking about straightening your teeth but are not sure whether fixed braces are right for you, this guide covers everything you need to know.

What can fixed braces actually treat?

Fixed braces are one of the most versatile orthodontic treatments available. They are particularly effective for patients with more demanding alignment concerns, overcrowded teeth, significant gaps, deep overbites, crossbites, and teeth that have erupted out of position. Unlike removable aligners, which work best for mild to moderate cases, fixed braces can handle the full spectrum of orthodontic problems. If your concerns are complex, fixed braces are very often the most appropriate solution.

What to expect during treatment

Once your brackets are fitted, you will return every 4 to 6 weeks for a short adjustment appointment. At each visit, your clinician will tighten or change the archwire to keep your teeth moving steadily in the right direction. Most patients wear fixed braces for between 18 and 24 months, though this varies depending on the complexity of the case. Throughout treatment, you will be guided on how to clean around your brackets, which foods to avoid, and how to manage any temporary discomfort after adjustments.

What happens when the braces come off?

The moment your braces are removed is one worth looking forward to, but the work does not stop there. Once your teeth have reached their final position, a retainer is fitted to hold them in place as the surrounding bone and gum tissue settle. Wearing your retainer as instructed is essential to protecting the results you have worked towards. At Brocklehurst Dental, we provide all the aftercare and guidance you need to make sure your new smile lasts a lifetime.
